Weekly Roundup

Monday 30th October 2017

Week seven! Full steam ahead!

Working with the guys on the UI to get more pages done I would say we’re about 75% through the initial round of UI updates.

Mondays are always crazy busy and today was no exception. It was kind of a frustrating day trying to work with the whole team, some of who have different expectations and different definitions of done.

For me, thinking about the whole customer experience is crucial to the success of this project and it becomes extremely frustrating when people involved in the project don’t care about the messaging and look and feel of the email communications going out to the existing user base. Firstly, the branding of the email is totally different to that of the platforms current branding and secondly, the messaging seems out of whack to what they are actually offering. These are two areas I will be having more of a say on for future communications.

People need to stop focusing on dumb shit and actually worry about working on important features that are going to bring the most value in the shortest amount of time. Basic agile principles that they all seem to forget.

Back to the exciting stuff! I wasn’t 100% happy with the current set up of Minerfy and the current roadblock in regards to how it processes the vendor tax, so I spent the weekend rebuilding it.

Tuesday 31st October 2017

Tuesday must have been so hectic that I didn’t even get a chance to add a journal entry! I generally take notes throughout the week and create this roundup post on a Sunday. It’s now Sunday and I have forgotten what I did … do I care? No. Why? Because I don’t let these things cripple me. I can’t go back and change it so there is no point worrying about. Move on and focus on the important things!

Wednesday 1st November 2017

Getting deep into the development with the team now. We’re making a lot of progress and they are loving having me there as there has been times where I have had to change the designs due to how existing functionality is already built in. This makes getting tasks done a lot faster. Continually pushing towards that launch date!

Yesterday I spoke about not being crippled by my mistakes. Something I am crippled by though is opportunity. I have so many ideas for projects I want to create plus the existing 3 major projects I already manage. I’m now involved in a new project with Coops, doing the UI and front end dev plus I received an enquiry for someone who wants a new website set up. You cannot tell me there is no opportunity on the Central Coast when it comes to IT. You want it… Put in the work!

Thursday 2nd November 2017

I spoke with Phil this afternoon and got a quick brief on some UI design work required for the Landlord Portal application. He would like me to spend half a day to go through and make some improvements where I see fit.

Not sure how much I can achieve in a few hours seeing as today is the first time seeing the application. Feeling positive though as I know I can improve it. I will see how far I get and keep you updated.

Friday 3rd November 2017

Today, the whole morning was spent working on improving the UI for the Landlord Portal which is connected to MMgr. I went through and get a feel of the current system and work out the areas which can be improved. By lunch time I managed get the overall look and feel done along with the Dashboard.

Back on to the project and the guys are making awesome progress. The look and feel has come a long way since I started and I am proud of not only what I have achieved but what the team has achieved in what really is a short period of time. There are always going to be things to improve. The most important part is to work on the features that are going to bring the most value to users in the shortest amount of time. There are some small attention to detail features that I really want the guys to revisit once it launches.

I’m glad I’ve got the support team to back me up on the Minerfy theme I’m using as I ran into some shortcode issues with some of the sliders not displaying correctly. A quick ticket to the support team asking them to provide the correct CSS code to fix the issue. Keen as to get an MVP live so I am able to test the waters with the people I have discussed the project with.
